Prepare Your Application Materials

Securing an internship can be as much work as completing an academic class. It is important to pace yourself and plan ahead so that you can be successful in your search. Use the resources below as a guide for preparing and gathering your application materials.

Application Basics

  • View the Resume page for templates and advice.

  • View the Cover Letter page for guidelines and resources.

  • The best way to share your work with employers is through a portfolio website. It’s easier than you think to set up one up.

Application Tips

  • Always read and follow application instructions carefully. They will vary from position to position.

  • Put your full name in the file name of your resume, cover letter, and anything else you upload or attach to an application.

  • Apply before the position deadline.

Employers may choose to close applications early if they find applicants they like.

  • Hyperlink your portfolio website on your resume.

If you have any passwords on your website you must provide them on your resume.

Level Up Your Application Process

  • Learn to write a great Outreach Email.

  • Practice digitally with Big Interview and/or in-person by scheduling an appointment for a Mock Interview with a Career Advisor.

View the interview pages to learn more.

  • Learn to follow up on your communication with confidence.

After You’ve Applied

  • It may take a while for employers to get back to you with a decision — if they do at all. Two weeks is a professional amount of time to wait before following up with an email.

  • You may not hear back from an employer about your application. Employers often receive so many applications that they can only reach out to those they want to interview.

  • Learn how to evaluate and juggle multiple internship offers.
